About the artist

I have been working as an artist and designer for over 30 years. Starting with clay and cameras in the early 1970's;  I studied art at Michigan State University and received a BFA in ceramics in 1981.  I went on to take extensive graduate level studies in ceramics.  In 1985 I began my studies to receive a Masters in Landscape Architecture at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1988.   For the next 7 years I worked primarily as a landscape designer, and also taught ceramics at a local community college for 3 of those years.  In the Fall  of  '92   I began  creating  a series of ferro-cement planters with tinted concrete, inlaid tiles, and relief-work.  One thing led to another, and shortly after I moved to Lansing with my family I found studio space, bought a welder, and  focused on being an artist/sculptor.

Today I work in metal - mainly steel and aluminum.  My work has a wide range of style, size, and technique.  For the last 5 years I have been using a lot of shading and color in my work.  I have also been doing a lot of releif work; hammering out aluminum into various forms and then welding them to create my Mask series and other pieces intended to be hung on a wall.

I design and create pieces that fall into many catagories, such as, art (non-functional), functional (fine craft), and work that falls somewhere in between.  I don't  concern myself with the distinctions; I concern myself with creating work that I like and like making.

I hope you enjoy the work displayed here.  If you have questions or comments, please contact me by phone or email;  I'll enjoy hearing from you.
