Commissioning artwork:
Around half of my work is done on commission. This process requires communication between the client and myself. Usually the client has an idea: of the type of piece they are looking for; the area they want it to go; the function of the piece;... I need to speak and work with the client so that we both have an understanding of what will be involved with the process, and what the final piece will be.
If the commission is for a piece that is similar enough to a work that I have already done, then there will be less design time and less set-up time involved with the piece, and the cost will be similar to the original piece. But, when the process requires more time -with either the design or set-up - then that will be worked into the cost of the piece. Early on, the more a client can tell me about what they want, the better and smoother the process will be.
After the client and I have communicated, and I feel I have enough information to start, I will come up with one or more sketches/proposals for consideration. At this point the sketches may be to scale, or they may be 'concept' sketches. These are sent to the client for their consideration. This may be all that is needed to procede to the next step of fabricating the piece. In some cases, particularly with large and/or complex pieces, it will be necessary to come up with more detailed plans, possibly even a scaled mock-up of the design. Each client and each project is different; and should be approached according to its own circumstances.
Payment for a commissioned piece also varies depending on the situation. Typically, for a small to medium sized work, a deposit of 50% of the final price is required up front once a design has been approved by the client. The remaining 50%, plus any shipping and handling costs, is due upon completion of the work. In cases of a costly or long-term project, the cost may be divided over 3 or 4 payments.
